Beginning in January, the base fee for trash pickup will drop to $11.89 per household from the current $11.99. Residents pay extra for pickup of yard waste.
The contract extension also calls for solid waste, yard waste and recyclables to be picked up the same day in each of five new zones. Each zone will be assigned a single day from Monday through Friday.
During weeks with holidays, pickup will be moved back a day, with regular Friday pickups set for Saturday.
Now the city is split into two zones, with solid waste pickup on Monday or Tuesday and yard waste pickup the opposite day. Recyclables are picked up citywide on Wednesday.
The extension calls for the base rate to be frozen until 2012, when the first of three 30-cents-a-month annual increases will take effect. The original contract had called for a 30-cent monthly increase to go into effect next April; that has been canceled under the extension.
