Corrigan Defeats Dooley in District Voting

St. Louis County Executive challenger, Bill Corrigan, defeated incumbent Charlie Dooley in winning 14 districts to Dooley’s 13, but Dooley prevailed in the total vote count. Dooley’s strength came from north county voters by winning 70.81% of the vote. In South County, Dooley won 38.52% compared to Corrigan’s 58.83%.

In West County, Dooley got only 33.68% of the votes compared to 64.36% for Corrigan. In the Central districts of Bonhomme and Clayton, Dooley lost both with Corrigan receiving 52.32% in Bonhomme and 51.69% in Clayton.

In two districts, neither candidate received a majority of the votes receiving less than 50%.

Comments received on this site since the election include the following:

“Charlie got re-elected due to the rampant racism in North County.”

“Charlie, your win is not a MANDATE, you barely were re-elected to your post. Take note, you won your spot back with the help of your entitlement greedy supporters. Come down off of your pedestal and start governing and representing the real taxpayers.”

Many residents in the county feel Mr. Dooley has often “reacted” to events rather than “acting” thus creating a continuous stream of headaches – taxes, trash, police, mergers, etc. It’s felt he often rides in on the coattails of others taking credit where credit is not due. One example may be his campaign of the County having a AAA rating when this rating may have been there long before him.

County Political Meetings Being Scheduled

St. Louis County Executive candidate Bill Corrigan's campaign called for the incumbent, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, to participate in a debate. Dooley's campaign then called for a televised debate prior to the November 2 election.

Corrigan's campaign would like the League of Women Voters to moderate it. The exact date of the potential debate has not been released.

In the meantime, the candidates are scheduling their own meetings and town hall discussions on issues of interest to St. Louis County Residents. Bill Corrigan has one set for:

Corrigan Says Jump, Dooley says How High

Charlie Dooley has spent seven years as County Executive. Leading up to this election, how much progress has been made strengthening ethics? None. His administration has spent seven years on the wrong side of the ethical boundaries that everyone else holds themselves to.

For examples, you can take Dooley's practice of tithing county employee salaries for his campaign, trying to steer millions in Federal funds to a campaign staffer, or the endless cloud of corruption surrounding his "consigliere” John Temporiti.

Where there's smoke there's fire, and this is just too much. It's not a misunderstanding or an awkward set of circumstances or a poorly phrased comment, it is a sustained pattern of behavior. This is how Charlie Dooley operates.

Bill Corrigan's Town Hall Meeting

Bill Corrigan addressed a full house of more than 115 people at the Holiday Inn South Tuesday evening, November 17. The audience was enthusiastic with vocal support of Corrigan’s comments. Corrigan is running for the St. Louis County Executive position in the November 2010 election.

Corrigan’s first question to the audience was, “Are you proud of your St. Louis County Government?” The answer was a resounding “NO.”

He pointed out that St. Louis County is a lawyer’s “Field of Dreams.”

Just a few of the comments and remarks heard during the 75 minute session included:

· We will have ethics in St. Louis County Government.

· The St. Louis violent crime rate has increased 44% over the previous year.

· The St. Louis County crime lab is over 50 years old and that a new crime lab is desperately needed.

· Corrigan said he is against a merger with the City of St. Louis.

· He said more collaboration is needed between the City and all other municipalities.

· All too often government settles for mediocrity and not excellence.

· The County Council meetings are a joke.

· A line item on the County Council agenda is a report from the County Executive. All too often the report is “No Report.” Reference to the current Executive was “Charlie ‘No Report’ Dooley.”

· South County is a cash cow to St. Louis County.

· The county’s trash program was miserably mishandled and may get worse before it gets better - and maybe not before the three pending lawsuits are settled. This could be well after the November 2010 election.

· We need an elected official as Assessor and the "ENTIRE" system of the Real Estate Taxes to be reformed.

. The county executive cannot be allowed to manipulate the Police Board to replace the Chief of Police.

Charlie Dooley likely to be the major issue in next year's county exec race

Bill Corrigan, a Republican candidate for St. Louis County executive, held a news conference a few weeks ago to outline his proposed ethics policy and make veiled jabs at the man he hopes to oust next year: Democratic incumbent Charlie Dooley.

But in an age of instant reaction, it took the Dooley camp almost 24 hours to respond.

The delay wasn't prompted so much by his rival's jabs, a Dooley spokesman explained, but because Dooley isn't ready to launch his re-election campaign.

With more than a year to go before Election Day, campaign treasurer and manager John Temporiti said that Dooley would, ideally, prefer to wait until candidate filing ends in late March.
Only then, Temporiti added, will Dooley know whether a challenger like Corrigan has company.

But lately, Dooley has been confronted with less-than-ideal public scrutiny of his administration and his allies, which may force him to reassess his own campaign timing:

>> Dooley's governmental lobbyist, Darin Cline, resigned a few weeks ago after acknowledging he was in serious tax trouble with the Internal Revenue Service.

>> Temporiti, former chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party and a former top Dooley aide, has drawn fire over his private lunches with two Democratic County Council members. Temporiti wanted to know why they had rejected a proposed county contract involving a firm that employs his son, and if the council members might change their minds if it came up again. (The two -- Democrats Barbara Fraser and Steve Stenger -- say their opposition remains.)

>> Controversy arose over a Saturday meeting of county department heads , all appointed by Dooley, held on Oct. 3 at a private law office. An initial media report -- which the executive denies -- said the department heads were to provide a list of firms that do business with the county for possible campaign donations.

Fund raising moves at fast clip for St. Louis County executive candidates

St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and Bill Corrigan, his likely Republican opponent in the November, 2010 election for the office, are raising money at a fast pace, campaign finance reports said.

Dooley, a Democrat, reported raising $320,764.69 between April 1 and June 30. Corrigan, an attorney from Ladue, didn’t enter the contest until mid-May; he reported raising $276,373 between May 15 and June 30.

Following state law, both candidates on Wednesday filed quarterly campaign finance reports with the state Ethics Commission. Both candidates must win their respective party primaries for the office in August 2010 before they can face each other in the following November.
Dooley reported having $429,707.22 in his campaign chest. Corrigan said he had $265,118.13 available.

John Temporiti, the campaign manager and treasurer for Dooley, said the county executive is well on his way toward reaching a target of raising $1 million this year. “I fully expect we’ll raise well over $1 million,” Temporiti said Tuesday.

Since the end of the reporting period, Dooley has raised an additional $36,000, reports his campaign filed with the Ethics Commission show.In the reporting period, contributors were about evenly divided between those who contributed $500 or less and those donated $501 or more, Temporiti said. The spread of contributions shows an enthusiastic level of support for the county executive, Temporiti said.

In a statement Corrigan said volunteer support and resources he has received thus far has been overwhelming. “This election is clearly going to be different from the past,” he said.

Corrigan has said he plans to raise $1 million for his campaign.
