"District at Crestwood" - If All Goes Well
If all goes according to plan, Crestwood Court will be "District at Crestwood" by 2014.
Almost all of the 55-year-old mall will be demolished and replaced by a 310,000-square-foot, outdoor Town Center format. It will feature a huge plaza surrounded by stores and restaurants. The plaza will be the focal point for concerts, farmers markets and other outdoor events.
Centrum Partners, the mall's owner, made a presentation of its redevelopment plans at the June 12 meeting of the Crestwood aldermanic board. Sol Barket, a partner with Centrum Partners, and Centrum consultant Vic Pildes, did not offer exact information about future tenants, the exact size of the parking lot, or other details.
Centrum took an unusual step in making a public presentation on a project in its preliminary stages. However, the aldermanic board asked Centrum to make an appearance to assure residents that mall development is underway.

As a St. Louis expat now in Naptown (Indianapolis), I have always been interested in Crestwood Plaza, the legend of its inception (shunned by Webster Groves) and its difficulties despite being embedded in a prosperous area. Civic leaders should look at Glendale Mall in northern Indianapolis, an exact counterpart which seems to finally have recovered after a similar decline and several unsuccessful redesign efforts.
