County Announces Remaining Bids for Trash Districts; 4 Haulers Selected for Entire County

St. Louis County opened the remaining bids on May 28 for the last four of eight trash collection districts. Four trash haulers out of an estimated 20 haulers in the county have been selected to serve the eight districts. All other haulers will technically be “banned” unless they are selected by any subdivisions that chose to opt-out of the County’s program. Approximately 311 subdivisions have opted-out.

Aspen Waste Systems Inc. of Earth City submitted the low bid in Districts 6 and 8, which include Lemay, Mehlville and Oakville. The company's bid is $11.31 a month in the first year, rising to $12.11 in the third year. The service includes once-a-week trash and recyclables pickups and twice a year bulky waste collections.

IESI was the low bidder in District 2, which covers the Spanish Lake area. Its monthly charge for the basic service would rise from $12.03 in the first year to $13.07 in the third.

In District 4 in southwest St. Louis County, Veolia Environmental Services submitted the apparent low bid of $12.25 a month in the first year to $13.25 in the third. Veolia has captured three of the eight trash districts awarded by the County.

County officials will review them and ask the county council to award contracts. The haulers would start service on Oct. 1.

The trash district haulers selected by the County for all eight districts are with prices shown for the first year.

District 1 – IESI - $12.09
District 2 – IESI - $12.03
District 3 – Veolia Environmental Services - $11.60
District 4 – Veolia Environmental Services - $12.25
District 5 – Allied Waste - $12.29
District 6 – Aspen Waste Systems - $11.31
District 7 – Veolia Environmental Services - $ 12.40
District 8 – Aspen Waste Systems - $11.31

First of all I would love to know in which company Fred Weber has a financial interest. Second I thought there was some guidelines that prohibited a company from getting more than two districts or is that no longer applicable? Does Aspen Waste Systems have a sur name that someone may recognize or is that the Weber company? I think it is unusual that none of the huge haulers i.e. Midwest Waste, Waste Management haven't received a district. Maybe they didn't want to mess with the county any more than the have to already. I suppose that they can do as well servicing all of the opt out subdivisions. Good prices now but wait for three years and see what they are.

Fred Weber owns Crown/Excel. They don't have a true residential presence. However, there is rumor they have a stake in Meridian Waste. Meridian is a small waste hauler with a residential presence mostly in North County in addition to having some city contracts.

As for the big boys, Midwest Waste is involved. Midwest = Allied. However, I too am surprised Waste Management did not win a bid . . if they bid??

I find it difficult to believe that anyone in St Louis County is paying less than $12.40 a month (highest bid). And if you are, where do you live and what company are you using? I am sure it does not include the new charges they will be adding to include curbside recycling and bulk pick-up, which is now required for everyone in St Louis County. As a resident of a subdivision that "opted out" I am hoping we can "opt back in" for these rates.

I think the "Big Boys" did bid....but did not try too hard or want to get the contracts with the prices they bid. They are probably going to wait and "buy up" the contracts from the others in the future.

Dont be tricked. Big deal on the cost of the service. They will make their money on the extra fees. I have allied waste now and in one month in went from 8 bucks to 23 dollars. After 3 years....who knows.

    >This doesn't make sense. I live >on the boundry line between two >trash districts. If I lived on >the other side of the road, 30 >feet away, I could get 12 months >trash service for the cost of 11.

Not all the districts are the same size geographically nor is the customer base.

IT APPEARS VEOLIA IS GOING TO WIND UP WITH CONTRACTS FOR THREE OF THE EIGHT DISTRICTS.

IT IS GOING TO EFFECT A LOT OF LOCAL ST LOUIS TRASH HAULERS.

I NEVER SEE ANYTHING CONCERNING VEOLIA BEING A FRENCH BASED COMPANY. AND THE PROFITS ARE GOING TO WIND UP IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY.

THIS IS THE FIRST BATTLE FRANCE HAS WON IN THIS CENTURY! VIVA LA FRANCE!

The residents of districts 1 and 2 are getting the shaft.IESI bid was accepted by the county.IESI prices are higher then the other accepted bidders.Yard waste pickup will be 12.09/mo plus 5.00/mo for trash container plus 12.00/mo for yard waste pickup.I will now be paying more than I now pay.All theri other services are higher as well.
Someone must have know someone in the trash districts affected.I'd like to have WM back,or one of the
    less expensive haulers.
The County Council needs to review
all charges for all services and question why IESI is so much more expensive.

I was at a meeting this week and it is my understanding the contract price does not permit added fees.

My trash bill will be cut in half, plus now I don't have to waste gas taking my recycling all over town. More service less cost. I was unhappy at first, but wow!
