St. Louis County officials have granted the Islamic Community Center permission to expand its plans for a community center in south St. Louis County.

The county planning commission on Feb. 8 approved the change in plans. On Tuesday, the County Council affirmed the action.

After some controversy, the county in November 2007 allowed the organization’s plan for a community center of 25,000 square feet on 4.72 acres on the west side of Lemay Ferry Road, 75 feet northeast of Buckley Road. The organization, which serves the Bosnian community, is raising money for the project and has not constructed the building.

The county agreed to expanding the building to 46,000 square feet and adding a mosque of 4,000 square feet.
