County Web Site for Info on Trash Program Leaves A Lot To Be Desired

If you are looking for the latest information about the County’s trash collection system, the County’s web site ranks pretty low and is really not the place to go. Here’s why.

>> The latest trash information posted on the web site is dated November 5, 2007. No “news” now for 38 straight days and counting as of 12/13. http://www.co.st-louis.mo.us/index.cfm?ViewMe=10715

>> The web site page for St. Louis County Health has a message from the director about the 2004-2005 Budget. It's always great to read about news in 2005 in 2007. http://www.stlouisco.com/doh/ The site does have a link for a Holiday Recycling Guide.

>> The St. Louis County web site lists six recycling locations all within other city limits in the area. Interesting. So the County does not have a recycling location of its own. http://www.stlouisco.com/doh/Holiday_Recycling_Guide_07.pdf

>> The best source of county trash news has been in the local newspapers and this web site. http://subdivisiontrustees.blogspot.com/

Best yet if you need fast information, call the St. Louis County Solid Waste Districting Program at 314-615-8906.

    Cost of convenience

I kind of liked County Executive Charlie Dooley. Too bad he is serving his last term in any elective position. Surely no retiree ever would vote for him again after this trash program of his.

The county is talking about a charge of "only" $9 a month. Now, I drive to the recycling center about once a month with our few cans, bottles and such. The papers go in a bin at a nearby school, which makes a couple of bucks on it. That is not going to change. Even with gas at $3 a gallon, the drive doesn't cost more than a buck or so. Believe me, the convenience of curb-side pickup is not worth $7 or $8 a month. I wonder, will the recycling center give away the glass, aluminum, steel, etc.? Surely not. Who gets those proceeds?
