North & South County Residents Opposed to Trash Proposal

There was a substantial amount of opposition among North County residents as well as South County residents at early meetings this year regarding St. Louis County's trash pick-up proposal.

As reported on the 5:00 p.m. news on KMOX radio this past Wednesday, September 12, there is a great deal of opposition to the St. Louis County proposal among South County residents. As a result, there is a large turnout expected for the final meeting to be held on Monday, September 24 in South County. One South County resident who spoke in opposition to the County proposal at the first meeting projected an attendance in excess of 500 people at the final meeting.

The two remaining meetings are as follows:

Whether trash districts in St. Louis County are a good idea or not I'll leave to others to discuss, but I am surprised at all the outrage expressed on this subject.

However, it seems that no one in south county is equally outraged by the requirement that single-family dwellings as of July 1 now require an inspection by St. Louis County and an occupancy permit before they can be sold.

I think it's time to reconsider establishing the city of South Pointe. I'm ready to sign a petition. Where do I send my dollar?

If we continue to ignore our responsibilities, we will and are losing our rights:

    • The right to choose who will collect our trash.

    • The right of eminent domain being twisted and distorted by the powers that be, taking away its true intent.

    • The property-tax reassessment formula is flawed, resulting in our being overtaxed.

It appears there is subterfuge in the imposing of the trash-collecting law. Follow the money. Believe me, there's much money to be made by those who get the contracts. And who's going to give them the contracts? Not you or me.

I repeat this whole thing "stinks,'' and if we don't stand up for our rights now, when will we?

"If it's not broke, don't fix it. We've existed 60 years with our own trash service. They say they've been examining this for 15 years, analyzing it and researching it. I don't believe it. I believe it's a ploy, personally, to get rid of the small haulers because the large haulers, for political reasons, are more expeditious to what their intent and what their goal is."

Maybe Dooley's 2006 campaign-finance report can tell us. There is a $1,275 contribution from Waste Management listed.

"This is, without a doubt, the best way to make it almost virtually impossible for me and my brother to stay in business. And if it doesn't, then it actually puts us behind the eight ball. Because if we don't get any districts, we have 15 trucks that we're not going to be able to pay for. So I think small independents have been doing well for a number of amount of years. And it is virtually the best way to make us go away."
