Does South County Have any Major Problems with Deer?

There are certain areas in Sunset Hills and Fenton along the Meramec River, but not as much as West County.

South County has a lot of wide-open unincorporated areas. You can hunt as long as it's at least one acre. This is primarily archery hunting. South County also has some densely-populated areas where there is no good habitat for deer. You have more municipalities in West County.

The biggest wildlife problem in South County is skunks. Each year, we get 30 to 40 calls about them, mainly along the Meramec River and Jefferson County. They're night animals. If you see one, you don't want to go near it. Don't leave out dog food or anything they'll eat and turn on an outside light.

What areas in the St. Louis region have deer problems?

A lot of deer use the St. Louis County parks like Queeny, Greensfelder, Creve Coeur, and Lone Elk as refuges. They can stay there because the county doesn't allow hunting in its parks. Kansas City and Columbia (Mo.) allow it. This is archery hunting, which means shooting at a range of 10 to 15 yards. Bullets aren't flying around for hundreds of yards.
