The St. Louis County Department of Planning and the Missouri Department of Conservation announced the Native Commons demonstration project. A $10,000 grant will be awarded to a subdivision in unincorporated St. Louis County to fund the transition of common ground to a native landscape.
By using native landscaping in common ground instead of traditional manicured turf, subdivision associations can reduce maintenance costs, promote healthy ecosystems and create more attractive and sustainable neighborhoods.
Any subdivision with common ground and trustees in unincorporated St. Louis County is eligible to apply. Applications can be downloaded online at: tinyurl.com/NativeCommons, email to Louis Clayton at lclayton@stlouisco.com, or call 314-615-2529.

Won’t this approach also encourage wildlife, perhaps some not totally desirable types such as snakes and skunks, to enter the “native” habitat? Provide them with cover and they will come. They will be followed by loony toons like the great squirrel hunter in Chesterfield. Will we ever learn that every time we mess with nature, nature wins.
