Ferguson hires new police chief

St. Louis County Capt. Tom Jackson has been hired as police chief in Ferguson. Jackson takes over the Ferguson department on March 8, replacing former Chief Tom Moonier, who retired.
As part of his 30-year career with the St. Louis County, Jackson has been a SWAT team supervisor, an airplane and helicopter instructor pilot, undercover detective and hostage negotiator. He has a criminal justice management degree from Tarkio College and a certificate of criminal justice education from the University of Virginia.

He has most recently served as the Commander of the Bureau of Drug Enforcement and the Multijurisdictional Drug Task Force in which he manages detectives from St. Louis County and sixteen other agencies that make up the largest drug Task Force in the Midwest, according to the county’s website.
