County Budget Includes $400,000 for Start-Up of Trash Program

St. Louis County residents will face higher taxes and the shutdown of the Queeny Park swimming pool and North County skating rink next year, the result, officials say, of a tough economic period.

St. Louis County Executive, Charlie Dooley, submitted to the County Council on Thursday (Nov. 1) his annual budget proposal, a document that included a property tax increase of 2 cents for every $100 of assessed value. Dooley said the increase, which would reverse most of a 2.25-cent reduction the county made in 2005, was needed to balance a total budget of $505.4 million for next year. That is 2.87 percent higher than this year.

The budget includes $400,000 to start operating the controversial trash collection districts in the unincorporated areas of St. Louis County. While County officials say the program will reduce the cost of trash hauling to residents, it looks as if residents will somehow have to pay the $400,000 to start up the program.

Those Recycle Carts that the County continues brag about and gift away, will cost the County in excess of $3 million dollars. This needs to be investigated.
