Lemay community center draws approval

The Lemay Community and Aquatic Center is the result of an agreement with the St. Louis County Port Authority and Pinnacle Entertainment, which owns the River City Casino in Lemay. Funding will include $5 million from Pinnacle, a $475,000 federal grant, and $8 million to $10 million in bonds to be paid through the casino's lease payments to St. Louis County. River City also agreed to a 1 percent sales tax to cover the center's maintenance and operating expenses.

That will raise at least $13.5 million. The construction will cost $12 million with the rest going to furniture, exercise equipment, desks and computers, and other pieces of gear for the center.
The $12 million center will offer an aquatic area with a leisure pool, lazy river and lap pool. Indoor facilities will include workout rooms, a basketball court, an indoor track and a community space. It will be located at South Broadway and Kingston Drive at the northern tip of Jefferson Barracks County Park.

More than 200 people took a look May 16 at the renderings and plans for the new community center at an open house at Hancock Place Elementary School. The meeting was hosted by County Executive Charlie Dooley and Denny Coleman, president of the St. Louis County Economic Council.
